The name Tatachilla is a aboriginal word meaning ‘red earth place' and the earth has produced some extraordinary results for Tatachilla. Originally built in 1901 and steeped in the history of the McLaren Vale, the modern Tatachilla was launched in 1995, making sure that the integrity and heritage of traditional winemaking methods were preserved. Tatachilla reds for example are still fermented in old open fermentation tanks. The traditional winemaking techniques enable them to produce their deep coloured, full-bodied Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon consistently. Tatachilla's Clarendon Merlot made history at the 1999 Sydney International Wine Competition as the only Merlot ever to win trophies for Best Wine of the Competition, Best Red Table Wine and Best Fuller Bodied Dry Red Table Wine.
